May 2025 - Eyewear Is Becoming a Must in Pickleball
Why Eyewear in Pickleball Is Quickly Gaining Momentum
As pickleball continues its explosive growth across the country, players are facing a new conversation: eye protection.
While knee, back, and shoulder injuries are nothing new in sports, an increase in eye injuries on the pickleball court is drawing serious attention — especially given the game’s speed, small court size, and growing number of older participants.
A Growing Concern
In a recent survey by The Dink, over 10,000 pickleball players shared their thoughts on eye protection:
62% said they already wear protective eyewear.
Only 11% said they'd never consider it.
Medical experts are noticing the trend too. Dr. Andrew G. Lee of Baylor College of Medicine warns that some pickleball-related eye injuries can be severe, including:
Eyelid and brow lacerations
Retinal detachment
Damaged pupils or irises
Dislocated lenses
Total loss of an eye
What the Pros Are Saying
Top professionals like Mary and Maggie Brascia, Erik Lange, and Anna Leigh Waters are strong advocates for protective eyewear. Mary Brascia put it bluntly:
“The game is speeding up. You need to have eye protection because the hand battles are just too fast.”
Anna Leigh Waters adds:
“Everyone in pickleball should be wearing eye protection due to the speed the ball is being hit at such close proximity.”
A Simple Step for Long-Term Vision
Whether you're a teen learning the game or a retiree enjoying league play, your eyesight matters. Why risk your vision over discomfort or fashion? Racquetball and squash embraced eye protection years ago — it’s time pickleball follows suit.
Your Move
If you haven’t already, consider trying protective eyewear during your next match. You might be surprised by how it improves not just your safety, but your game.
